TRACK DAY FAQs

Track day insurance is an ACCIDENT only policy. Insurers pay for the cost of accident damage to your car if (1) you crash (2) someone crashes in to you (3) something breaks on your car that causes you to crash. This is not a Mechanical Warranty policy so we do not cover component failure. There are optional extras to provide for (1) Personal Accident(2) Vehicle Recovery (3) Armco Damage and (4) insurance of your policy excess (Cars up to £50,000 only).

Key exclusions include (but not limited to) the following (1) No third-party property or bodily injury cover (2) Engine blow up or component failure (we cover any accident damage that may be a result of a mechanical failure). (3) Loss of market value (4) Accidents caused by competitive or timed laps that encourage a driver / rider to push to the limit (5) Use on the road or public place as required by the Road Traffic Act 1988 (6) Use by persons not named on the policy (7) Damage caused by the deployment of airbags. It is important you read the policy wording and summary of cover for a full list of all the policy exclusions, conditions and limitations.

We fully understand that many track cars and bikes are modified and this may arguably increase the value beyond normal market value. We suggest you insure the vehicle for what you feel is a reasonable figure given any modifications. This is not an Agreed Value policy but, in the event of a total loss, you can open the conversation with the loss adjuster, at your level. You will be asked to justify this value, of course. The loss adjuster's background is very motorsport orientated, so he will understand the nuances of modifications. He may seek comparisons, so his recommendations are fair to both you and the insurers.

Cover is provided for accident damage which we define as following a clear and obvious impact. The Track Day Insurance Policy will NOT cover costs that are otherwise attributed to wear, tear, and deterioration. This is not a mechanical warranty policy.

This is not a mechanical warranty policy so if your engine blows up (or any other component simply "fails") that's a very frustrating day at the track and there is not much we can do apart from sympathise. You ARE covered for the resultant ACCIDENT damage caused by a component failure.

Fire is covered if it is a direct result of an accident. Thus the sequence of events is (1) Oh **** (2) BANG! (3) What's that burning smell ?. Fire caused simply due to a mechanical failure is not covered, so stages 1 & 2 cannot be bypassed.

We do not cover for simply a broken windscreen maybe caused by a stone, bird, or a bit of someone else's vehicle. The policy excess would probably negate any such claims anyway. The windscreen is covered if it is part of a bigger accident.

The policy has a basic limitation of £80 per hour for labour inc VAT. For some makes of car this may not be adequate. Broadly speaking, half the premium is for "labour" so if you need to increase the labour rate from £80 to £100/hour a premium of £100 will increase to £110.

Think carefully about who you let drive your car. We are just the insurance bods and don't provide relationship counselling services.

Non competitive activities on a track fall into a broad range or variations. As long as there is nothing competitive we can cover Track Days, one to one tuition, experience & dealer days, training days, parade laps, filming and photo shoots. We even cover public days at the Nurburgring (excluding third party cover).

We can cover circuits and airfields within the UK & Europe that may be used for Track Days. Dangerous circuits like Castle Combe, Goodwood, Oulton Park and Nurburgring do carry increased premiums and/or excesses. Restrictions exist where Vehicle Recovery may be required.

The Total Loss Only option does exactly what it says on the tin - the policy ONLY responds in the event the bike is a constructive total loss (the cost of repairs exceeds the market value of the bike). If the cost of repairs does not exceed the market value of the bike, the Total Loss Only option will not cover the costs of repairing your bike. The Ground Up option covers the cost of repairs / replacement of structural components even when the cost of repairs does not exceed the market value of the bike. This option also responds in case of a total loss (the cost of repairs exceeds the market value of the bike).

Unless specifically agreed, the policy does not cover the costs of removal of the damaged vehicle nor of storage. There is a great option to add Vehicle Recovery to you policy which can be used to take your car from the circuit to your home or a local garage. This service can also be used should you have a mechanical failure rendering the vehicle inoperative.

This cover is only available on cars up to £50,000. The "triggering point" for making ANY claim is when the damage exceeds the stated excess amount. If you have paid to insure the excess the insurers will pay the excess amount too. If the damage is below the excess there is no claim. The cost of this varies, but the minimum additional premium is £24.99 for this cover. We do not provide policies that are insuring an excess of another insurer's policy.

This is a great little add-on so in the event you cannot drive your car home due to (1) mechanical breakdown or (2) an accident at the track, you can EITHER use Mansfield Recovery (if you are in England, Scotland or Wales) to collect your vehicle from the circuit to take you home, OR you can make your own arrangements and we will reimburse up to 90% of your costs (max £400 or £1,500 for recovery within Europe). Original receipts will be required. More details. Please bear in mind we are just the insurance blokes ok, we don't do the "Recovery" bit. Circuits can be remote and if you use Mansfield Recovery they could take a while to arrive. Sorry. Mansfield will do their best but don't bleat to us if it takes a while. By using Mansfield you will not be incurring any charges.

If you select this option, where circuits such as Nurburgring charge for the damage caused to their barriers we will reimburse you for up to 90% of your costs up to a maximum of £3,000. Original receipts will be required.

This is a limited cover for death or permanent disability only. There is no cover for loss of income or medical expenses / repatriation. Cover is available in "units". 1 unit = £25,000 and costs £14.99 for a single days cover. A maximum of four units can be purchased. Accidents can happen and we encourage all our customers to have at least one unit of cover.

The premium varies depending on the value, circuit and your age. Typically the premium for a £20,000 car is between £130 - £160 to insure with an excess of £1,200 - £1,450. For bikes, the scope of cover selected makes a difference, but a £10,000 bike will be between £90 and £150. The insurers minimum excess for cars is £750 and £1,000 for bikes. For cars there is an option to insure the excess. Generous discounts are available on Multi-Day policies and you can vary the level of excess to reduce the premium (see below). Additional Admin Fee £30.

There are four great reasons for taking a Multi-Day policy (1) Generous savings of up to 40% (2) refunds for unused days (subject to no claims) (3) Only one Admin Fee of £30 and (4) For cars, "blocks" of up to 10 days can be bought on any one policy & it is not necessary to know all the dates / circuits in advance and you can update your own Log as and when you know. For bikes up to 8 days can be insured in advance but we do need to know where are when you are on track. The last track date needs to be used within 12 months of the date of purchase.

By selecting a higher excess and / or buying a Multiple Track Day policies (see above), we are able to provide discounted premiums. Some circuits are cheaper than others to insure with dangerous circuits like Castle Combe, Goodwood and Nurburgring being the more expensive tracks.

It is possible to insure a lower sum than the total value of your car. For example, if the total value is £40,000, we can offer alternative premiums based on £11,000 (27.5% of the full value) and £20,000 (50% of the full value). The premium does not reduce proportionately since the first 50% of the value of the vehicle is the most exposed part of the value. Insurers will provide a maximum sum insured of £120,000 on cars up to £200,000 total value.

This is an optional extra costing £17.50 for one track day if you are within England, Scotland or Wales (or £49.99 if within Europe). Details of cover Discounts are provided on Multi-Day policies.

Our policies carry an additional Admin Fee of £30 inc tax. If a policy is cancelled we keep our Admin Fee and there is a further Cancellation Fee of £20. For every Endorsement we need to issue to reflect an amendment to your policy (that cannot otherwise be done yourself online) a further Admin Fee of of £30 is applied. Uploading new dates onto your LOG is FREE, but if you need to subsequently amend a date or circuit there are nominal additional Admin Fees. Additional Information.

As an example of the scale of costs : If one day costs £100, a three day policy will cost £250 and five days £350. Ten days will be about £650. Much depends on the type / value of car and the circuits. If you know dates and circuits in advance this may reduce premiums further. Minimum excesses are 5% of the TOTAL VALUE of the car.

(1) Savings of up to 40% (2) Return of premium for unused days (subject to no claims) (3) You save on multiple Admin Fees compared with buying individual daily policies. (4) for cars you do NOT need to know all the dates and circuits in advance. You can update your LOG for FREE, but nominal fees are charged to amend an existing date or circuit. More about our fees

The last track date needs to be within 12 months of the date you paid for your policy. The policy otherwise expires on the last track date.

If you have an existing Multi-Day policy that is nearing expiry because you are about to complete your final track day, you can extend for additional days and we will calculate the premium as if the additional days were part of the original policy. The additional day(s) must be within 12 months of the date the policy was purchased.

It is critical to your cover that we know where and when you are out. Where you have accepted the cover and not yet told us about all the dates & circuits you are attending, this you can update "as you go". You will receive an email confirming your LOG has been updated and you are then "good to go" for that day. It is FREE to load up dates, but once on your log, should you need to change a designated date / circuit there may be small Admin Fee to pay of £9.95. The last track date needs to be within 12 months of the date of purchase.

You can cancel your Multi-Day policy IN WRITING at any time and we will process any refunds due within two working days. Refunds are calculated according the the policy Cancellation Scale. In the event of a claim, your policy will automatically be cancelled and there are no refunds.

In the event your policy expires (i.e. you have NOT completed the number of booked days on your policy), we will treat the policy as a formal cancellation and return premium to you for unused days as per our Cancellation Scale. See also "Cancellation" above. We cannot carry over a "credit" to a new policy since policy inception dates may overlap our contract renewals with insurers and this complicates our own accounting. We prefer to keep old and new policy transactions separate. This also gives you greater freedom should you wish to seek an alternative provider and you are not bound or limited to our services.

Where you are or have been unable to attend your track day(s) or the event(s) have been cancelled we will provide a refund (subject to no claims) according to the Cancellation Scale in our policy. We keep our original Admin Fee £30  and deduct a £20 Cancellation Fee, but the balance we rebate to you.

It is possible to change a vehicle or replace a current vehicle for another. How we do this very much depends on the difference in the value of vehicles and for how many days. We will need to issue a formal endorsement to reflect the change and there may be an additional premium plus £30 Admin Fee to pay.

The policy contains exclusions such as damage caused by airbag deployment. In certain circumstances we can specifically amend your policy if requested. We will need to issue a formal endorsement to reflect the change and there may be an additional premium plus £30 Admin Fee to pay.

Our website will provide instant quotes. The level of cover can be adapted to your own needs and you can vary the policy excess. Up to eight days can be insured in advance.

Our quotes will be emailed to you on the same working day which have a link to pay securely on-line. At the time of purchase there are optional extras for (1) Personal Accident Cover (2) Vehicle Recovery (3) Armco Damage.

For cars over £120,000 total value we have to refer to insurers - irrespective of the sum you wish to insure. Insurers may not always agree to provide and cover and we can only accommodate cars up to a total value of £200,000. In any event the maximum cover we can provide is £120,000 sum insured irrespective of the value of the car. Insurers may insist there is an instructor in the car with you.

We can accommodate cars of up to £300,000 total value, but the sum insured and level of cover insurers are prepared to offer may vary depending on the type of activity and the circuit. Close attention is paid to the experience of the driver and insurers may require you to have a licenced instructor/ coach to act as an extra pair of eyes during your time on track. Insurers are not bound to provide a quotation for high value / high performance vehicles.

Cars only - To reduce the premium it is possible to insure a lower sum than the total value of your car.

Cars only - If you insure a sum less than the full value of your vehicle you become liable for any damage above the sum insured. It is permissible to effect a second insurance policy with another provider for higher (additional) limits but speak with us first. We and any additional insurer will need to be aware of the existence of each set of responsibilities. There may be potential complications handling claims that need to be addressed ahead of time.

You are able to cancel your policy IN WRITING at any time after purchase. There is a formal Cancellation Scale to determine the calculation for return of premium. We keep our original Admin Fee of £30 and there is a £20 Cancellation Fee. No refunds are provided if there is a claim under a policy.

There is a £20 Cancellation Fee and we keep our original Admin Fee (£30 inc tax). Effectively, if you cancel before taking to the track the total cost is £50.

For single day policies we will rebate the premium to you, less a £20 Cancellation Fee. We keep our original Admin Fee of £30. For multi-day policies, unless you instruct us otherwise, we will replace the cancelled date with another FREE of charge. If you need to cancel the policy (subject to no claims) we will follow the Cancellation Scale. We may need supporting documentation from you.

Where a Multi Day policy has expired and track days remain unused (within 365 days of the date of purchase), we will treat the policy as a Cancellation and return premium (subject to no claims). Cancellation Scale.

As defined by the BIBA Jargon Buster a "third party" is simply a person claiming against another person or body who is described as the Insured (policyholder). In insurance terminology the first party is the insurer and the second party is the insured person, so the one doing the claiming is the "third" party. Third Party can include damage to someone's property (car, armco, track, building) or bodily injury - and that is anything from minor cuts and bruises to death!

There are currently no insurers providing any third party cover to individuals, so you are taking the same risk as the next person. If someone causes serious bodily injury to you, there are no automatic rights of recovery against them and they will not have an insurer you can claim from either.

No. You have no coverage for any liability to third parties, whether personal injury/death or property. We do have an optional extension to cover armco damage (£17.50 per day). Damage is your problem and following a test ruling at Wolverhampton County Court his Honour Judge Mitchell concluded that if someone crashes into you on a track day, even if it is clearly their fault - then tough! The judgement followed a case where a driver under tuition collided with a track day participant who then sued for damages. In essence the judge's ruling is that anyone participating on a track day is aware of the potential risks involved and has a choice of not driving on to the circuit. (Source: Circuitdriver.com, April 2007). The disclaimers that are signed do have a bearing on the acceptance of the fact that everyone on the track has VOLUNTEERED to be there is the first place. No one is making you or anyone else get out there, and no one is encouraging you to drive beyond speed you feel comfortable with. Race circuits are however an alien environment and can feel strange and wide. Open circuits like Silverstone can actually feel quite pedestrian - until it all starts going wrong. So, take responsibility for yourself, protect yourself, and your machinery. Click on the link if you specifically want to understand more with regards to Nürburgring Insurance.

Possibly you are embarking on a PUBLIC day or what the Germans call Touristenfahrten. The "rules" are very different regarding third party cover for The 'Ring if it is a private TRACK DAY as opposed to a PUBLIC DAY. For more comprehensive details specifically on Nurburgring Third Party Insurance click here.

Probably not! Ask your insurers. Increasingly, policies specifically exclude track days. If your road insurers state they will cover track days, make sure you understand if there are any restrictions pertaining to (1) circuits covered (2) organisers (3) number of days you are covered for. Make sure they explain the extent of cover and that you understand where there may be limitations.

Will an accident on a track day affect my NCB? Different insurers will have different answers to this. Do not be afraid of asking your road insurer "where do I stand with my NCB / policy renewal in the event I have an accident on a track day?"

There is an increased "risk" for starters, but also on a track day you are driving / riding outside of all the "norms" of the public highway. Speed limits, cornering speeds, braking distances etc are all exaggerated in the quest for your day of fun and speed outside of the usual framework of regular highway driving. This effectively removes the comfort of the "known" factors for insurers.

No. The insurers on our track day policies are not part of the regular motor insurance market. Cover is basic and claims are not handled in the same way as road risks policies.

No. The information you have provided to us will only be held by us and the insurers we use for the purpose of the policy(ies) of insurances you arrange through ourselves. We will NOT send any of your details to "carefully selected organisations" since we respect the fact it is really frustrating receiving unsolicited mail. This information we reserve to publicise through the MORIS.co.uk Blog on the home page of our website. You have the right to ask for a copy of the information held by us in our records but we may ask you to pay a small fee. You also have the right to ask us to correct any inaccuracies in your information by writing to us. If you want to know more about our use of your personal information, this should also be done in writing to the above address.

Accident Damage: - BEFORE you leave the circuit (1) obtain a signed Accident Report Form (P X of your policy) or download. (2) Take photos of the damaged car at the circuit. As soon as reasonably possible log into your MORIS account to submit a formal Claims Notification.

For Vehicle Recovery DO NOT contact us. If you are within England, Scotland or Wales and wish to use Mansfield Recovery, speak directly to them on 0208 867 6200 quoting account name "MORIS". Alternatively make your own arrangements and submit your original invoices to us for reimbursement up to the policy limits. Note: MORIS have no direct control over the service standards of Mansfield.

Insurers will pay up to the sum insured under the policy less the policy excess and you are liable for all costs over and above this amount.

If insurers have paid for any replacement parts, they have the right to retain the damaged parts as salvage. Likewise, if the insurers have paid out on the basis of a total loss, they have the right to retain all salvage. Where the sum insured is limited or restricted to a value less than the market value insurers retain the rights to dispose of the salvage. Any proceeds will be shared proportionately less 10% for insurers expenses.

No. Insurers may ask that two estimates are obtained and they use a panel of repairers from which they may choose a company depending on make and model and location, price etc.

Unless specifically agreed, the policy does not cover the costs of removal of the damaged vehicle nor of storage.
